Visa Lottery Ban Won’t Affect 2013 winners
The United States government says its Diversity Visa lottery programme has been very “successful” in Nigeria, adding that Nigerians no longer need to participate in it.
US Consul-General, Mr. Jeffrey Hawkins, spoke in Lagos on Thursday during a press conference to explain why Nigerians were excluded from participating in the DV 2015 programme registration.
He, however, said that Nigerians who won the 2013 visa lottery would not be affected by the new policy.
According to him, the primary objective of encouraging Nigerians, who hitherto belonged to the category of under-represented groups in America to immigrate to the country through the DV lottery program, had been achieved.
Hawkins said though Nigeria was the only African nation on the list of 19 countries barred from participating in the programme, the development had nothing to do with insecurity or criminal records of Nigerians in the US.
He said, “The congresionally – mandated Diversity Visa Programme is administered on an annual basis by the US Department of State to promote immigration from countries that are underrepresented in America. We make available 50,000 slots worldwide to those countries that don’t have historic migration to the US based on simple, but strict requirements.
“And Nigerians has over the years benefitted from this programme. But, I’m pleased to say today that Nigeria has graduated from this programme as we now have a frankly strong, incredibly diverse, prosperous and increasing Nigerian-American community in the United States.
“The DV programme has been successful in Nigeria as we now have an estimated 1.5 million Nigerian-Americans in the US and we are proud of their contributions to our economy. Nigerians are now fully part of the American life and there are a large number of successful citizens of this country in the US.
“We have achieved the objective of promoting diversity in the US from Nigeria. In view of this, there is no more need to encourage immigration from Nigeria through the US Diversity Visa lottery programme. The DV lottery is no longer appropriate in Nigeria.”
When asked if Nigerians could still be eligible for the programme in the future, Hawkins said, “That is unlikely, but it can happen.’’ He, however, added that the development will not affect other “legal” forms of immigration into the US.
The senior diplomat said consular services for Nigerians seeking to possess immigrant visas that would help facilitate “family unification’’ and allow genuine investors to migrate to America would continue to be provided by the US Mission in Nigeria.

70 Landlords Arrested For Lack Of Toilet Facilities
No fewer than 70 landlords have been arrested in the last two months for
defaulting in providing toilets facilities in their houses in Ekiti.
The Director of Environment and Sanitation, Mr Tunde Balogun, made this
known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-
Ekiti on Friday.
Balogun described the landlords as “recalcitrant residents’’, who always
test the will of government when issues relating to policies and
programmes come to question. He said that the affected land lords would
be prosecuted under the Ekiti State Environmental and Sanitation Law,
2004 and the Environmental Regulations 2009, as amended.
He recalled that this year, the state Ministry of Environment organised an
awareness campaigns on the need for the landlords to abide by
government’s policy of “One House, One Toilet’’.
The director, who said the exercise would be continuous one, declared
that all offenders would face the wrath of the law.
"Being a lawyer has always been my dream" 9ice goes back to school-
After having one of the most successful albums of all time, 9nice has decided to
go back and pursue his career as a lawyer. In this interview with Nigerian
Tribune..he says its always been his dream.
You were said to have pulled out of your Law programme at the Lagos State
University to face music. That decision paid off, but you seem not to be happy
about it now?
I didn’t pull out because of music; I left school because I was unable to
pay my school fees. While I was on the street, I gave hundred percent of
my life to music and it paid off eventually.
When I was in school, I was just doing music for fun until I left school. At
that point, I decided that I was going to face music passionately and from
that point, things changed.
Your decision to leave school wouldn’t have gone down well with your parents,
how did they react to it and what was constantly coming to your mind back
then?
It was not an easy decision to make. There were days that I had to live in
the studio. Talking about my parents’ reaction, I had to lie for a while,
pretended as if all was well. Before my parents knew I wasn’t in school, it
was too late to complain because I was already on TVs, making money
and rocking shows all around.
Would you consider going back to school someday?
I’m in school already, studying public safety and Common Law at Capella
university. It is an online programme. I can’t think of any other course
except law.
Would you trade your being famous for something else if you look at some of
the bad side of fame that you have experienced over time?
Yes, I will love to trade fame with some silent life that does not arrogate
too much attention to one, but it has got nothing to do with any bad
experience. No matter what you do or who you are, there’s always a
difficult time and life challenges that you can’t run away from. But I will
really love to trade because I wish to be a lawyer. That has always been
my dream.
Do you think life would have been different for you should you have been a
lawyer?
Honestly, life as a normal person is fine and more wonderful, free, fair and
peaceful. But as a public figure, you enjoy more and you pay more in terms of
the price you pay for being famous. If I come to this world again, I would prefer
normal life.
Nigeria Partners Russia To Build A Nuclear Power Station
After a few years on the African continent, Nigeria is likely to appear a second
nuclear power station (the first was built in South Africa). Construction of
nuclear power plant could take Russia.
Already announced for the undertaking of the intergovernmental agreement,
which provides for cooperation in the design, construction, operation and
decommissioning of the first nuclear power plant in Nigeria. This was reported
by the corporation "Rosatom".
After the accident at the nuclear power plant "Fukushima" some countries have
decided on the gradual closure of nuclear power plants. Overall, however, the
world is not going to give up the peaceful atom. In Africa, nuclear generation is
virtually absent, except for nuclear power plants "Koeberg" in the south of the
continent, and the interest in it is growing, the director of the communications
department of the state corporation "Rosatom" Sergey Novikov:
"The concern is that nuclear power in the world will evolve. As an
environmentally friendly source of energy available to the new EU energy-
hungry.
This is also a technology platform for the development of new technologies,
including new energy sources in the future. Therefore demand for domestic
nuclear power occurs in different regions: Southeast Asia, Latin America and
the Middle East. Including the African continent. And wherever there is a
demand for this, Russian media as one of the top three technologies at the
global nuclear energy market is ready for mutually beneficial conditions to
participate in the creation of a national nuclear power program. "
According to the World Nuclear Association, an interest in the development of
peaceful nuclear energy in Africa exhibit Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Sudan,
Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, Uganda, Namibia. However, for these countries to talk
about concrete steps to translate the ideas of peaceful nuclear energy is too
early. But in the case of Nigeria, made the first steps, said Sergei Novikov:
"Since Nigeria signed an intergovernmental agreement on the peaceful use of
nuclear energy. Now experts have completed work on a new draft of the
intergovernmental document on the construction of the first nuclear power
plant in Nigeria. At the level of delegations agreed text of the document, and
now Rosatom, and our counterparts in Nigeria transmit these documents to the
governments of the two countries that there were procedures for the approval
and adoption, and the document would be ready for signing. "
Of course, an intergovernmental agreement - it's not a contract, prior to the
commencement of construction. But experts believe that the work on it is within
the scope of Rosatom, which seeks to create a broad framework for
international cooperation in the field of nuclear power generation. In addition,
cooperation with Nigeria is interesting from another point of view, the Chief
Editor of the atomic portalAtomic-Energy.ru Pavel Yakovlev:
"Nigeria is one of the largest producers of uranium. Around seven per cent of
the total uranium is concentrated in Nigeria. Therefore, interest in this country is
not accidental. Until recently, there was a major player in France, and the
French mining companies were active there."
On the issue of security, then, according to Sergei Novikov, any project of
building the first new nuclear power plant in the country accompanied by
regulation and supervision of the IAEA. All of these technologies are perfected.
And there does not need to invent anything in terms of physical protection of
nuclear facilities.
