Nigerian artistes dominate MAMA 2014 nominations; Davido leads the pack

Africa's number one music authority, MTV Base has announced the nominees for this year's MTV Africa Music Awards.  The announcement was made tonight, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 at an impressive nominations party at The Sands in Johannesburg, South Africa.

This year's nominations prove that Nigerian music has fast taken over Africa. Out of fifteen different categories, Nigeria has been nominated in eleven categories and includes some of the biggest names in the Nigerian entertainment industry including Omotola Jalade, Chimamanda Adichie, 2Face, PSquare, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Olamide, Flavour among many others. Jesse Jags has spoken again. In this new interview with Pm News, Mr. Jags says the smoking of weed in his redemption song video was intentional and was meant to offend people’s thinking. He said a lot about marijuana….

In your Redemption Song’s video, you are seen puffing out thick smoke from a hand rolled wrap of weed suspected to marijuana. What message are you trying to pass across?

For me, that scene was just a way of pushing people’s perception about some certain things. It was just about making some people feel uncomfortable. People sing a lot about love but can they love as much as an armed robber? Segregation leads us nowhere so the weed was just to offend people’s thinking.

Don’t you think people will see it as promotion of weed?

I do not see anything wrong with weed; just the same way I do not see anything wrong with money or women. I just think anything done in excess is bad. However, if I have never married before, I cannot say anything about marriage whether it is right or wrong. It is about someone else’s life.
To those who smoke, some condemn the area boys (social miscreants) and see them as smokers, though certain steps and experiences may have led them there. So who am I to judge anyone? If I was born on the streets of Lagos, probably I would have been an area boy too. None of us is better than the other. That is life. Yes, I have spoken about marijuana in my music. However, every other artiste have made allusion to marijuana in more demeaning and derogatory ways than I have. Others have sang ‘Give me the lighter; pass me the ganja’ but my own message is not about that. People should listen to the message in my music not the marijuana. If you really listen to the truth in my music, you will not have a problem with the marijuana in my music. I am not promoting or condemning people who use it but I guess everybody wants to evade the truth that I talk about in my song.

MTN DENIES INCREASING PRICE OF RECHARGE CARDS{via@winsomemedia}

Have you bought MTN recharge cards over the
expected price this year? Retailers of MTN
recharge cards have alleged an increase in the
price they buy recharge cards in bulk as
responsible for increase in the retail price. Some retailers add N20 over the normal price
(based on value) of all MTN card denominations
they sell. For instance a N200 MTN card may be
sold at N220. The arbitrary increase is applicable to only MTN
recharge cards in most parts of Lagos. Some retailers said the cards were scarce and
dealers have now capitalised on the scarcity to
increase their retail prices. “MTN cards are scarce in Lagos and dealers are
selling to us at increased prices, so we too have to
add N10 or more to each denomination to recoup
our money,” a retail vendor, Emeka Ogor, told
Thisday. Worried about this development, the management
of MTN has therefore said it has not effected any
retail price increase in any of the recharge card
denominations, stating that the face value of all its
recharge card denominations remain the same. Corporate Services Executive, MTN, Mr. Wale
Goodluck, said: “We have not effected a price
increase and the retail price of the various
denominations of our recharge cards and recharge
vouchers remain the same. “Our recharge vouchers come in the following
denominations: N1,500, N750, N400, N200 and
N100, and must be sold at the face value.” Disturbed by the new development which started
last week, Goodluck said: “Any such hike is
contrary to MTN’s wishes or knowledge. MTN has
a well-established distribution structure and all our
authorised partners within this structure are obliged
to sell recharge cards at their face value. “Any variance from the authorised face value of
recharge cards is without MTN’s knowledge or
authority.” “MTN’s 55 million customers can purchase airtime
via recharge cards or recharge vouchers as well as
through a virtual top-up. The airtime recharge
options are generally distributed via a very
extensive trade and distribution network which has
over the years successfully enhanced accessibility to airtime and customer
convenience,” he said. Goodluck assured customers that the company
was working assiduously to arrest the situation
and urged its customers in the affected areas to
explore other options of purchasing their airtime,
such as the MTN Virtual Top Up (VTU) or MTN
Auto-Top Up.

There are reports that three people lost their lives yesterday in a motor accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos causing heavy traffic gridlock on the ever busy link between Lagos Mainland and the Island

The accident involved a Black Prado Jeep whose three occupants reportedly died on the spot. The driver of the vehicle was said to have been trapped with efforts being made to extricate him from the wreck.

The reason for the accident is yet to be ascertained but sources say the vehicle lost one of its tyres while on high speed making the driver lose control of the jeep.
As a result of this, there is heavy traffic on the bridge, though traffic officers are trying their best to restore normalcy.

Walcott was stretchered off during the club's 2-0 win over Tottenham in the FA Cup third round on Saturday and scans have revealed he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

The 24-year-old will undergo surgery to rectify the problem, which will sideline him for the remainder of the Premier League season and the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

Walcott courted controversy during Saturday's match as he gestured the scoreline to the Tottenham fans while being stretchered off.

The Football Association confirmed on Monday that the winger would face no disciplinary action for the gesture, but now injury has brought a premature end to his campaign.

Walcott has made 21 appearances for Arsenal and England this season, scoring seven Goals
